Level 1 Mental Health Skills Training Program:
Counselling for GPs
Objectives

Improve GPs' skills in mental health assessment with
emphasis on high prevalence disorders such as anxiety,
somatisation and depression. This will include use of
assessment tools, issues of confidentiality.

Improve GP's ability to work with the consumer and
their carers to develop a mental health plan including
resources and treatment options. GPs will be encouraged
to work with consumers and carers to come to a shared
plan.

Improve GPs' ability to monitor the progress of the
mental health plan and prevent relapse. This will
include setting up of review appointment, use of
assessment tools, feedback from consumers and carers
and encouraging consumer self-monitoring.

To give GPs the skills and confidence to undertake
mental health consultations using the Three Step Mental
Health Process.
Workshops:
interactive format with readings, case discussion,
and large group learning.

4 workshops each 3 hours

including preparation of 1 set of materials
