Issues in Illness: Family therapy approaches to illness

This course offers an overview of theoretical approaches and applications in working with ill people and their families. The course is structured in 4 three hour workshops which can be taken in 2 days or in half days over a period of some weeks.

Workshop 1. Definitions and types of illness, mental and physicalm actue, chronic. Relevant theorectical paradigms, narratives, Bowenian, loss and grief, time and timelessness, witnessing.
Workshop 2. Application: working with genograms and hypothesising with families
Workshop 3. Theory: Structural and systemic changes in families with an ill member. Circular patterns and questions.
Workshop 4. Application: Grief paradigm, triangulation, systemic approach using circular patterns and questions


This course was run with very positive feedback. The course can be adapted to particular groups in th ecomunity, such as:

  • Workers in the Intellectual Disability field
  • Health practitioners, GPs and nurses
  • Therapists interested in illness issues
  • Multidisciplinary groups working with specific illnesses
