Hearing the hurt: Family therapy approaches to depression in children and adolescents

This course offers an overview of theoretical approaches and applications in working with depressed children and adolescents and their families. The course is structured in 4 three hour workshops which can be taken in 2 days or in half days over a period of some weeks.

Workshop 1. Overview of definitions of childhood depression, with historical context. Theoretical paradigms. Language for emotional expressiveness in families. Development of the Childrens Depression Scale (CDS).
Workshop 2. Application: working with genograms and hypothesising with families. Use of the CDS with children and families
Workshop 3. Theory: Structural and systemic changes in families with an a depressed child. Intergenerational patterns. Broader systems.
Workshop 4. Application: Opening up conversations between depressed children and families / treating professionals / school systems. Barriers to hearing depression.


This course has been run for therapists, psychologists and GPs. Feedback has been very positive.
