Older adults and ageing issues
An 18 hour course offers an overview of theoretical approaches
and applications in working with older adults and their
families and ageing issues. The course is structured in 6
three hour workshops which can be taken in 3 days or in half
days over a period of some weeks.
Workshop 1.
Theory: overview of elderly life cycle stage and family
homeostasis issues as older adult becomes less
independant
Workshop 2.
Application: working with genograms and hypothesising with
families
Workshop 3.
Theory: Structural changes for elders and other generations
commonly associated with declining independence.
Workshop 4.
Application: Grief paradigm, triangulation, systemic
approach using circular patterns and questions
Workshop 5.
Theory: Place of therapeutic relationship, cultural issues
and contexts of other helping relationships such as
medical, spiritual etc. Ethical dilemmas.
Workshop 6.
Applications: witnessing, validating, reflecting and
narratives.
This course was run in Singapore in May 2005, through
the Academy of Human Development, with 22 students attending.
